TOWER TRAIL

Role: Lead Designer and Director

Inspired by David Rygiol and James Walkers' "Type Hike" project (Typehike.com), this project is a poster and badge design of Tower Trail, a 0.3 mile hike at Ijams Nature Center in Knoxville, TN.

The project began with walk through the trail, where I observed and recorded the sights, sounds, and sensory experiences surrounding me. The creation of mood boards and numerous sketches contributed to the development of the poster layout, illustrations, badge design, and typography.

Additionally, this project received recognition at the Ewing Gallery Annual Student Art Competition, winning the Poster award, selected by the graphic design juror.

The trail connects the South Cove Trail to the River Trail and is named after the tall Island Home Airport Directional beacon at the top of the ridge. It passes through mixed hardwood forests and contains the official Tennessee State Tree, the tulip tree or poplar, which was used by pioneers to build log cabins.

There are also an abundance of tall sassafras trees with three-leaf shapes. This area is known to grow yellow trillium, mayapple, and true Solomon’s seal in the spring. The area is also habited by red-eyed vireos in the summer and yellow-bellied sapsuckers in the winter.
